Master Planning Strategies for Camps
11/15/2023 10:55 AM
Drawing from his experience as a Landscape Architect and Professor of Practice at Iowa State University, Tom will share several examples of site master plans and common processes used to develop a master plan. Specific topics include how the master plan can build on a camp’s mission, purpose, and values, and how a master plan can fit with the unique qualities and characteristics of the camp property. Additionally, a presentation of unique approaches camps use to implement their master plan will be provided, including examples of recent projects. This will be a highly illustrative presentation with several photos and images from representative projects. There will also be ample time for discussion, so bring your thoughts, ideas, and questions to this session!

Tom Neppl is a practicing Landscape Architect and faculty member of the Landscape Architecture Department at Iowa State University. In 25 years of professional practice, he’s worked with camps, and outdoor and environmental education centers throughout the U.S. on projects ranging from small garden spaces to master planning of large-scale, regional sites greater than 1,000 acres in size. From his Ames, Iowa-based studio, he’s served clients in 26 states, including several non-profit agencies and organizations, including the Girl Scouts, the YMCA, Salvation Army, denominational and non-denominational camps, and county and municipal governmental agencies. As a Professor of Practice at Iowa State University, Tom teaches foundational design and ecological design studio courses. He shares his professional expertise with students and aims to integrate place-based and field experiences into each semester. Personally, Tom and his wife, Tricia, love to travel with their adult children and each year they aim for a new adventure. When he’s not working on a camp master plan or teaching a design studio, Tom enjoys spending time outdoors. You can usually find him tending to his woodland garden, or floating on a kayak, and on rare occasions camping in Iowa’s Driftless region.
